Open Call for PQ Studio: Festival

The Festival in association with Zlomvaz Festival will present around 20 main performances in DAMU’s DISK Theatre and Řetízek Studio as well as additional site-specific performances and installations that are conceived and created with students as the driving creative force, offering the opportunity for emerging performance creators to have their work on an international stage and receive feedback from industry leading practitioners.

We are looking for students and emerging artists from across the fields of visual and performing arts to bring their work to the heart of Prague, and to become part of the incredibly vibrant international community that comes together every four years for the Prague Quadrennial. Open Call for The Best Performance Design & Scenography Publication Award

The Best Performance Design & Scenography Publication Award during the Prague Quadrennial 2015 received wide-spread public recognition, expanding the visibility of a diverse range of publications created about and around performance design and scenography.

Venues

Prague Exhibition Grounds

The main venue of PQ 2019 is the Prague Exhibition Grounds in the district Holešovice. You will find here a Press Center, an Infopoint, Box Offices, PQ Accreditation Center, PQ merch store, and Bookstore.

In the Prague Exhibition Grounds, Exhibition of Countries and Regions, Student Exhibition, Fragments, Performance Space Exhibition, Formations, Site Specific Performance Festival, PQ Talks, 36Q°, Best Performance Design & Scenography Publication Award Exhibition, PQ Studio: Common Design Project, PQ for Youth and Family, Emergence (Exhibition, Practice Exchanges, Portfolio Library, Festival) will be held.

In the Central Hall, there will be a coffee place. At the Křižík Pavilions you will find pop-up catering, cafés and bars.

You can reach the Exhibition Grounds by direct tram no. 1, 2, 5, 6, 11, 12, 14, 17, 25, and night trams no. 93 and 94. Tram no. 17 connects the Exhibition Grounds with another PQ location – the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, the Theater Faculty (DAMU). The path leads along the Vltava River and takes only 10 minutes walking. It is also possible to use the metro, red line C to Nádraží Holešovice. From here you can walk, or take tram no. 6, 17, and 26 to the Exhibition Grounds, it takes only in 2 minutes.

Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, Faculty of Theater (DAMU)

The building of DAMU is located on Karlova Street 26, which connects Charles Bridge and Old Town Square. You can find here PQ Studio: Workshops and Masterclasses and PQ Studio: Festival. There is also the Café DAMU in the building.

You can get here by tram no. 2, 17, 18, and by night tram no. 93 to Staroměstská stop. Or there is the green metro line to Staroměstská stop. From there it takes only 5 minutes to walk around the Municipal Library to get there.

Nádraží Praha Bubny

Vltavská, Prague – Holešovice, Nádraží Holešovice stop

Praha–Bubny railway station, located in Prague 7 – Holešovice area, is one of the largest stations in Prague. However, the station is not used for trains anymore. The station is not served directly by any trams or buses, but is 5 minutes walking distance from the tram stop and 10 minutes from Vltavská metro station. It is also located a short distance south from the mainline Praha-Holešovice station.

At PQ 2019 Praha – Bubny is the welcoming centre open to public for the Student Exhibition Waltz2019 from the Netherlands. Waltz2019 is a multiplier of real-world experiences collected through the art of slow travel and through welcoming experiences and rituals; acts and things that have no relevance in an illusionary or staged world because they are always real.

The Czech scouting organization has created an exceptional oasis of calm in the middle of Prague’s busy tourist center – a great place for meetups, education, and culture. It is a place worth the visit.

This location is part of the PQ Studio and is used for outdoor screenings of Czechoslovakian movies from the 1970’s and also as a location for the Finnish exhibition Robot Loves: A Little Bit Closer.

Holešovická šachta

Holešovická šachta is a space for creativity, culture, community and for any arts or sports. At PQ 2019 the Exhibition of Countries and Regions from Finland called No Doubt and Suck My Chair is to be found here.

Slovanský ostrov (called Žofín)

Újezd or Národní divadlo stop

Slovanský ostrov or Žofín is a an island on Vltava river in Prague. It is located on the right bank of the New Town, next to the Masaryk Embankment, between the National Theater and Jirásek Square. You can reach the island either from tram station Újezd or National Theatre.

During the PQ a  unique boat race around Střelecký Island is to experience. Create a crew of two to four competitors and come to hang out! Calm types can ride a boat or pedal boat and enjoy the views of Prague Castle and the Prague riverbanks.

Containall

Stromovka (Royal Game Preserve Prague 7)

Containall Stromovka is a seasonal summer cultural center. It is a multi-genre project in the Stromovka (Royal Game Preserve) at Prague 7. It is the spot for the exhibition Acts of Care from Finland and the PQ Studio #Chill will present a concert Between the Trees.

A few steps from the Exhibition Center (the PQ HQ) in the open air among the trees, listen to a great concert, have a drink, and play a game of beach volleyball, ping-pong, or pétanque.

Náměstí Jana Palacha

If you are coming from the Exhibitions Grounds to the centre, you will probably take tram n. 17. If you get off on the stop Staroměstská you will end at the Jan Palace Square. Náměstí Jana Palacha (Jan Palach Square) is located on the banks of the Vltava in Prague’s Old Town. The square is flanked by four important buildings and institutions: the Rudolfinum concert hall, the Museum of Decorative Arts, Charles University’s Faculty of Arts, and the Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design. The western side of the square opens onto Mánes Bridge and the Vltava River, with Klárov Park on the other side. At the center of the square is a small park with a sculpture of Antonín Dvořák.

It serves as a place for performances for PQ Studio: Festival Push, push baby! and Conexiones Blandas.

V Kotcích Street

V Kotcích Street in Prague’s Old Town connects Uhelný trh (Coal Market) with Melantrich Street. The street’s name derives from the market stalls (“kotce”) located in a large triple-nave market hall built around 1362. In 1739–1783, it was the site of Divadlo v Kotcích, the city’s first brick-and-mortar theatre and its second opera house.

PQ presents the performance Victory, Painted Skin Returns and La Petite Allumette here.

X10 Theatre

Národní Metro Station or tram 17 

In the basement of the former House of Artistic Industry on Prague’s Národní třída (National Avenue), a new and partially reinvented multigenre theatre for creative individuals who explore new forms of free artistic expression. This industrial-looking, unconventional, and experimental space attracts not only independent theatre, filmmakers, musicians, designers, and artists, but also and especially socially responsible individuals who are not afraid of open dialogue and of exploring important social issues. The extensive exhibition hall with a second-floor gallery is currently being used by various cultural organizations and educational institutions for panel discussions or lectures aimed at artists and the general public alike.

Public transport tickets

The same ticket is valid for tram or metro. You can buy them in ticket machines at metro stations or on tram stops or in selected shops. It is also possible to buy an SMS ticket and newly you can buy tickets in selected trams through the payment card machine.

Open Call for PQ Talks

PQ Talks is an exchange of presentations, forums, and discussions exploring all aspects of performance design. PQ Talks will follow the main themes of PQ 2019 connected with the cyclical phases of the creative process: Imagination, Transformation, and Memory. Through these areas the curators seek to explore “scenography” in its broadest sense, investigating what scenography is, what scenography could be, and what scenography was.

Open Call for PQ Studio: Workshops and Masterclasses

PQ Studio: Workshops and Masterclasses is a program of multi-day intensive workshops and exploratory masterclasses connecting established professionals with emerging and student designers. PQ is looking for professionals, educators, arts administrators, and emerging artists to lead workshops from all areas of the visual and performing arts – scenography, architecture , costume design, scenic/space design, sound design, lighting design and technology, digital media, projections, puppetry, technical theatre, dance and choreography, theatre theory, and fine art.
