In a Paris apartment, André, a father suffering from Alzheimer’s is losing his grip on reality. His daughter Anne and her partner Pierre are struggling with a complex range of emotions. All three share an unconditional attachment to each other, without finding a balance between the fragile feelings of love and hate, however. The exits and entrances in the dining room lead into a dead end, the black color alluding to memory loss.
The installation looks closer at the scene in which a demonic Man, who disturbingly resembles Pierre, has just kicked André and left the room, leaving a half-drunk cup of coffee on the table. Pierre is standing clutching the back of a chair, while Anne enters with a tray of roast chicken, inviting everybody to dinner. André is found crouched in the corner, sobbing in terror.
The spectator is invited to enter the labyrinth inside the father’s mind, in which the three characters and four voices create an emotionally charged limbo in a small dining room.
The installation is based on The Father by Florian Zeller, a 2016 production that opened in Theatrum, a theatre company based at the former Dominican Monastery within the Latin Quarter of Tallinn.
